Worked example
The MD5 of hello (lowercase, no newline) is 5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592. Hello (capital H) gives 8b1a9953c4611296a827abf8c47804d7. Use these values to check for extra spaces or line breaks when copying.
Understanding settings and results
- The digest is sensitive to capitalization, spaces and line breaks.
- MD5 computes a one-way digest; it cannot restore the original text from the digest.
Scope and limitations
- MD5 has collisions and should not be used for digital signatures, certificates or password databases.
- Match character encoding and line endings before comparing across systems.
Troubleshooting
- For mismatches, check leading/trailing spaces and CRLF/LF line endings.
- Use dedicated password schemes such as Argon2, scrypt or bcrypt for passwords.
Privacy and processing
A local browser script calculates the digest; text is not uploaded.
