Worked example
Encoding “keyword=office tools” as a parameter value turns spaces and reserved characters into percent-prefixed byte sequences, preserving the structural meaning of & and =.
Understanding settings and results
- Encoding a whole URL differs from encoding a parameter value. Usually only parameter values should be encoded.
- Spaces may appear as %20 or + depending on the form protocol.
Scope and limitations
- Do not repeatedly encode strings that already contain %XX.
- Decoding does not check whether a destination URL is trustworthy.
Troubleshooting
- %25 means the percent sign itself was encoded and may indicate double encoding.
- URI malformed often means a percent sign is not followed by two hexadecimal digits.
